What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that often appear blue or dark purple under the skin. They typically occur in the legs and feet due to increased pressure in the veins. While any vein close to the skin's surface can become varicose, this condition commonly affects the legs because standing and walking increase pressure in the lower body veins.

Causes

Varicose veins are caused by weakened or damaged valves in the veins. Veins have one-way valves that prevent blood from flowing backward. When these valves fail, blood can pool in the veins, causing them to enlarge and become varicose. Factors contributing to the development of varicose veins include:

  • Age: As you age, veins can lose elasticity, causing them to stretch and valves to weaken.
  • Gender: Women are more likely to develop varicose veins due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, pre-menstruation, or menopause.
  • Family History: A family history of varicose veins can increase your risk.
  • Obesity: Excess weight adds pressure to veins.
  • Prolonged Standing or Sitting: Jobs requiring long standing or sitting periods can reduce blood circulation.
